Town of Cary Water Conservation Programs
In March, the Town of Cary announced two new conservation programs in an effort to save more water.
The “Warm Season Grass Incentive for New Development” offers 21 percent reduction in irrigation meter fees for new development that uses warm season grass. Owners of these properties will receive direct mail about warm season grass irrigation needs as well as info on a warm season grass workshop. The irrigation water budgets for these customers will be adjusted downward based on the 21 percent reduction in expected water needs.
The “Turf Buyback” program advocates minimizing turf areas and expanding natural areas as a water saving practice. This program will offer property owners $500 to replace 1,000 square feet of turf with natural area. This could save 675 gallons per month for each 1,000 square feet during the spring and summer, assuming the turf is being irrigated one inch per week. Irrigation budgets for these customers will be adjusted downward based on a 25 percent reduction in expected water needs.
