Global Health Research Building - Educational and Institutional - Durham, North Carolina

In 2003, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) approved funding for construction of a regional biocontainment laboratory at Duke University Medical Center. The new Global Health Research Building (GHRB) opened its doors late 2006, representing the beginning of a new era in research on emerging infections and biodefense. GHRB is housed in a 33,145-square-foot space at the corner of Research Drive and Erwin Road. The first to open among thirteen regional biocontainment laboratories across the country, all charged with developing new vaccines, drugs and diagnostic tests designed to target infectious diseases. The Duke Regional Biocontainment Laboratory will provide the resources needed to respond to a biological crisis such as a bioterrorist attack or a flu pandemic. The laboratory allows the rapid development of diagnostic tests and treatments for individuals affected by viruses, bacteria, or other biological agents that can inflict serious injury or death.

The McAdams Company was retained to provide assistance through the site planning process as well as construction drawing approvals. As part of a large team of experts, the challenges of coordination with an out-of-state architect were extensive. The McAdams Company team served as the local liaison through the demolition process of a large parking lot, monitoring for minimal impact on the impervious area. The plans were accomplished on a very aggressive schedule.
